Ceylon cinnamon originates from Sri Lanka, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Today, it also grows in India, Mauritius, Madagascar, the Sunda Islands, and across Southeast Asia and tropical regions. It is easily recognised by its lighter colour and sweeter, more delicate flavour compared to cassia cinnamon. It does not irritate the tongue or nose — instead, it offers a soft, sweet and refined taste.
Ceylon cinnamon is valued not only for its flavour, but also for its natural health-supporting properties. It may support weight management, digestion and immunity. It is rich in antioxidants and shows antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects. In traditional medicine, it has long been used to relieve digestive discomfort such as bloating, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, heartburn or ulcers. Cinnamon supports the secretion of bile and digestive enzymes and may help improve nutrient absorption. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, it is also added to natural toothpastes to help reduce gum inflammation and support oral health.
In the kitchen, cinnamon has endless uses. It is a classic addition to cakes and pastries — for many people, an essential part of apple pie. A pinch of cinnamon can be added to coffee, tea, compote, cocoa or hot chocolate. It works wonderfully in puddings and apple sauces. It is also often mixed with honey, for example: 2 teaspoons of cinnamon blended with 3 tablespoons of honey make a delicious spread that may help soothe cough or cold symptoms. In Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines, cinnamon is used in many traditional dishes and spice blends, giving meals their warming, aromatic character.
